The Housing Authority of the City of Wilkes-Barre completed construction of its first public housing site in 1968. The building, known as Lincoln Plaza, contained 200 units for the elderly. Currently, the Authority has 861 units consisting of four high rise apartment buildings and two townhouse family developments.
In 1979, the Authority was awarded 40 Section 8 certificates which allowed low income families to reside throughout the city of Wilkes-Barre with rental assistance from the Authority. Currently we have 526 Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV) which includes 130 Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers designated for homeless veterans.
